BECOME A MENTOR

Our mentoring program is the most vital part of our children's success.
Picture

Everyone knows that children need role models in order to grow and develop into well-rounded adults. What many people don’t realize, however, is that the benefits of having a childhood mentor can last a lifetime. Children who have mentors often perform better in school, acquire better social skills, and are more likely to succeed in their chosen careers.
If you’re looking for ways to make a difference in a child’s life, consider becoming a mentor through Families Plus.

mentoring program mission

Bring together children in need in our community with dedicated and caring adults of like interests who can provide support, encouragement, and guidance.

How our program works:
PictureBe a positive role model!
Mentoring is so easy because all you have to do is include a child in the things you already like to do.  Mentors are matched with children based on their mutual interests not by numbers on a waiting list.  Whether once a week or once a month, the quality of the time is what matters.  Maybe you have a pastime like fly fishing, hiking, paddle boarding, painting, or fixing up your house or car. These are all valuable experiences for kids, especially those from poverty. Over time, you will hopefully build a relationship that will continue to grow.

The Power of Family Mentorship
Children of all ages benefit from community ties with adults who aren’t in their immediate families.  Being involved with mentoring families allows them to see different family interactions.  Things a mentor family can provide are:
  • An emotionally safe space
  • Healthy communication
  • Generous praise

Tag-Along program
Whether you run an automotive shop, store, restaurant, or office, we have a program for you!  Our Tag-Along program is for businesses that have children and teens with an interest in their field shadow once a week or once a month. This allows children and teens to see career options and is a great way for them to find more role models in the community. It is a very rewarding program, and we are willing to work with you as much as you are available.
The Tag-Along program is also available to individuals who are not quite sure about being a full mentor but have something they would like to share. This is a great way to get your feet wet in our programs.

Common Misconception:

  • "Will I have to spend extra money and time entertaining them?" All we expect is for you to spend your time as you normally would; just bring them along. Whether you have them over for dinner, take them with you on a weekend fishing trip, go to the movies, or hang out with them in your backyard.  You just need to give them the gift of time.

  • "I don't know how to 'fix' a child." It isn't your job to psychoanalyze them and give them life advice; that is what our licensed therapists are for. All we need you to do is be there, hang out with them, and be a role model.

  •  "What will their real family think?"  In our twenty-five + years of experience, all of our families have been grateful to have someone to help give them a break. You are a source of support.
