Mentoring Program Mission

Bring together children in need in our community with dedicated and caring adults of like interests who can provide support, encouragement, and guidance.

Exciting news! Families Plus has recently teamed up with Partners of Delta, Montrose, and Ouray to help connect even more of our kids with caring, trusted adult mentors. When nonprofits join forces, amazing things happen for the community. This collaboration means more young people will have strong role models to guide them, more families will feel supported, and our community will grow stronger together. We are thrilled about this partnership and the opportunities it will bring for the youth we serve! Click the button below to fill out a mentor application and learn more!

Mentoring is so easy because all you have to do is include a child in the things you already like to do. Mentors are matched with children based on their mutual interests not by numbers on a waiting list. Whether once a week or once a month, the quality of the time is what matters. Maybe you have a pastime like fly fishing, hiking, paddle boarding, painting, or fixing up your house or car. These are all valuable experiences for kids, especially those from poverty. Over time, you will hopefully build a relationship that will continue to grow.

How Our Program Works:

Children of all ages benefit from community ties with adults who aren’t in their immediate families. Being involved with mentoring families allows them to see different family interactions. Things a mentor family can provide are :

  • An Emotionally Safe Space

  • Healthy Communication

  • Generous Praise

  • Consistent Support and Stability

  • Opportunity to Learn Life Skills

The Power of Family Mentorship

Whether you run an automotive shop, store, restaurant, or office, we have a program for you! Our Tag-Along program is for businesses that have children and teens with an interest in their field shadow once a week or once a month. This allows children and teens to see career options and is a great way for them to find more role models in the community. It is a rewarding program, and we are willing to work with you as much as you are available. The Tag-Along program is also available to individuals who are not quite sure about being a full mentor but have something they would like to share. This is a great way to get your feet wet in our programs.

Tag-Along Program

  • “Will I have to spend extra money and time entertaining them?” All we expect is for you to spend your time as you normally would; just bring them along. Whether you have them over for dinner, take them with you on a weekend fishing trip, go to the movies, or hang out with them in your backyard. You just need to give them the gift of time.

  • “I don’t know how to ‘fix’ a child.” It isn’t your job to psychoanalyze them and give them life advice; that is what our licensed therapists are for. All we need you to do is be there, hang out with them, and be a role model.

  • “What will their real family think?” In our twenty-five + years of experience, all of your families have been grateful to have another trusted adult on their child’s team. You are a source of support.
